FOOD LICENSING & REGISTRATION (FSSAI)

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is conventional authority to implement the powers and to execute the functions dispensed to it under the Food Safety and Standards Act. It is called as the Food Authority. The Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006 was brought in to upgrade the hygiene and quality of food that calibrate standards for food products and standardize the production, storage, distribution, sales and imports to make sure the food products are safe for use.

FSSAI online Food License is controlled by Government of India and Ministry of Health and Family Affair which function as fssai license consultant. The Head office of FSSAI is located at Delhi and other regional offices are located the in Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Cochin and Guwahati. As per the Act, no person shall commence or carry on any food business except under a FSSAI license or FSSAI registration. Therefore, everyone is required to obtain a FSSAI License or Registration for food manufacturing or processing or packaging or distributing. Application to initiate a food business must be made to the FSSAI in the prescribed format. On the basis of application and supporting documents, FSSAI will accord approval and applicants are given a 14-digit FSSAI Registration Number, which is printable on the back of the product.

Features of FSSAI Food License

State FSSAI license

It is required by the food units whose turnover is less than 20 crores but more that 12 Lac per annum, and additionally for Manufacturers it also depends upon Volume of Production per Day. For example If applicant has a Vegetable Oil Unit, then per day processing volume upto 2 MT will require State License only.

Central FSSAI License

Central license mostly depends upon daily production volume of the product,. For example If applicant engages in Dairy business and his capacity of machinery or daily process is 50,000 liters or more, or 2500 MT per annum then they require Central license otherwise State License. Additionally Manufacturers of proprietary foods require Central license, whose turnover is greater than 20 Crores, etc.

FSSAI for Import & Export

India Exports and Imports a lot of products outside the country, there are many food items that get Exported/Imported from the country and they all need to be registered and licensed under FSSAI, for the business of Import & Export of Food products applicant is required to get Central FSSAI License. For Appling Central License for Import Export one of the most important documents is IEC code which is mandatory

  • Copy of address proof (Electricity/ Water bill)

  • Declaration Form

  • Food Safety Management System plan

  • Copy of Aadhaar Card/ Voter identity card of Proprietor/ Partners/ Directors.

  • Authority letter

  • Form IX: Nomination of Authorised Person by Company
